Matthew Baldwin (Playwright)

Matthew Baldwin is a writer and actor who lives between Bangkok and London.  He served as Chairman of Above The Stag Theatre in London from 2012 – 2023 and as Artistic Director from 2021 – 2022.

In 2013 Matthew and Thomas Hescott developed The Act, a play for one actor, for Oval House. Matthew was nominated for an Off West End award for Best Actor and jointly with Tom in the category of Best New Playwright. In 2014 The Act transferred to Trafalgar Studios in the West End.  In 2020 The Act was made into a short film starring Samuel Barnett and Simon Lennon. It was selected for the BFI Flare, Raindance and Hollyshorts festivals among many others.

Also in 2014, Matthew and Tom wrote Outings for James Seabright Productions which enjoyed a successful run at the Edinburgh Festival and a national tour.  Outings returned in June 2017 for a celebrity gala performance at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue.

His latest play, Cheaper by the Hour, about a gay brothel in contemporary West London, is mooted for production in 2024.

Film and TV work as an actor includes Material Girl and EastEnders (BBC); Augustus Pike in The Dark Room and Christabelle in The Act (Cinema Hades); Kenneth Harris in The Crown (Netflix).  Matthew is a fixture on the Pantomime scene and is a founder member of He’s Behind You Ltd – a company that produces London’s best adult pantomime. This season he will be performing at the Charing Cross Theatre.

He is very proud to have contributed to Queers. To write for the BBC, work with Mark Gatiss and see the monologue performed at the Old Vic was a triple whammy from which he may never recover.
